1281 new locally acquired Covid-19 cases in NSW: Gladys Berejiklian

New South Wales has recorded 1281 new local infections of Covid-19, with Premier Gladys Berejiklian revealing when the state will hit its worst day.

New South Wales has recorded 1281 new locally acquired cases of Covid-19 and five deaths, premier Gladys Berejiklian has revealed.

Speaking on Monday, the Premier warned the latest modelling indicated the peak of the state’s outbreak would come within the next week.

“According to the modelling I have received, we are likely to reach a peak in cases in the next week or so,” she said.

“That is what the modelling tells us, therefore the likely peak in intensive care beds required will be around early to mid-October.”

Modelling shows within the 12 local government areas of concern, cases will continue to rise until mid-September when immunity from vaccines takes effect.

However, modelling also suggests between 2,200 people a day will be hospitalised until mid-September and 3,900 people a day in October.

“Our surge capacity including staff in our intensive care units is 1550 (ICU beds); just to give people that reassurance,” she said.

“We have 2,000 ventilators, but when we are talking about beds, themselves with staff and experts, we have 1,550 surge capacity, which we hope we won‘t use.

“We certainly don't want to have to use of all those beds and staff, because we know what pressure it will put on the system but we want everybody to be reassured that the capacity is there.”

There are currently 1,071 cases in NSW hospitals, with 177 people in intensive care – 67 of whom require ventilation.

“They span all age groups and it is critical that we understand that COVID presents risk across all age groups, so please get vaccinated,” NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said.

Monday's deaths included a man in his 90s from south east Sydney who died at St George Hospital; he was a resident of St George Aged Care Facility in Bexley and acquired his infection there.

A woman in her 80s from northern Sydney died at Ryde Hospital, while a woman in her 50s from western Sydney died and a woman in her 80s from the same area both died at Westmead Hospital.

A man in his 60s from the Southern Highlands died at home.

Of the 1,281 new cases, 483 were from southwest Sydney, 348 were from western Sydney, 137 were from inner Sydney, 118 were from southeast Sydney, 67 were from Nepean Blue Mountains, 22 were from Northern Sydney and 44 were from Western NSW.

NSW also administered more than 31,000 vaccines in the 24 hours until 8pm last night, bringing the total doses up to 7,543,522.

There are now more than 40 per cent of eligible adults in NSW who are fully vaccinated, while almost 74 per cent have had at least one dose.
