What is normally a considered a quiet Sydney street was struck with tragedy on the weekend after a young girl died after being pulled unconscious from a backyard swimming pool.

Emergency services were called to a home in Edensor Park just after 4.30pm on Sunday to respond to reports of an unconscious child being pulled out of a swimming pool.

A bystander administered CPR before paramedics arrived at the house in Sydney’s west.

Multiple ambulance crews, including intensive care paramedics and a medical team consisting of a doctor, attended the scene and treated the primary school student.

The girl was then rushed to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition.

She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Just a day after the tragedy, the cul-de-sac full of family homes had fallen mostly quiet.

The shades were drawn at many of the homes on the street, with neighbours declining to speak with the media.

One neighbour, however, mentioned they did not know the family well but they had observed “many” emergency service vehicles and sirens on the hot Sunday afternoon.

While family themselves were home, they also declined to speak with the media.

NSW Police said officers attached to the Fairfield City Police Area Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

It comes amid a particularly deadly summer in Australia, during which at least 91 people have fatally drowned.
