Near-perfect weather conditions forecast for Christmas Day
Sunday is set to be a scorcher, topped off with a storm, but forecasters are predicting perfect weather for Christmas Day.
We sweltered on Saturday, will sweat on Sunday and get hit by storms on Sunday night — but the good news is the weather is looking perfect for Christmas Day.
The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed conditions will be near-perfect for Christmas barbecues and backyard cricket games next week.
Temperatures are expected to be around a warm 27C out west and slightly cooler near the coast when it comes time to tuck into Christmas lunch.
It will certainly be milder than Saturday, when the heat saw Sydneysiders flock to the beach for a dip.
And the BoM warns Sunday will reach highs of 36C in the city and 37C at Penrith, bringing with it a few storms.
“Sunday is another hot one, hotter than (Saturday) in Sydney,” forecaster Stephen Stefanac said.
“It is going to be very hot in the west and we’ve got an unsettled period of possible severe storms impacting Sydney with damaging wind gusts being the main concern.”
It will cool off come Monday to about 24C, with more potential storms across the Harbour City during the week.
“Unlike the storms the other week with flooding, they are not associated with widespread rainfall … still heavy falls on a real local scale but different to those storms the other week,” Mr Stefanac said.
By next weekend it should have cleared up, although there is a possible early shower.
“I think the main thing is you’re looking at is chance of a shower on Christmas Day but overall it might not be a bad day at all,” Mr Stefanac said.
“I think you can say yeah, have your game of cricket and get your barbecue out because it doesn’t look too bad. Bring out the barbecue.”
They are certainly looking forward to that on the northern beaches.
“Last year we didn’t get to celebrate because the northern beaches was in lockdown,” Mel Brock said during her surf club’s relays at Manly Beach on Saturday.
“We really wanted to embrace the sun, sand and surf we enjoy every day here and welcome in the festive season.”
