About 4.30pm on May 1 the 18-year-old female boarded the fourth carriage of a train at Museum Railway Station bound for Campbelltown via the South Line.
Thirty minutes later a man sat next to her and allegedly indecently assaulted her.
She moved away from the man and alighted from the train at Auburn Railway Station, where she alerted station staff and police were contacted.
Investigators from Flemington Local Area Command have today released images of a man they believe can assist with inquiries.
He is described as being of Indian Sub-continental appearance, with a dark complexion, aged in his mid-to-late 20s, with a slim build.
At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black t-shirt with white writing and a picture on the front; a red puffy jacket and blue denim jeans. He was believed to be carrying a backpack.
