A man believed to be in his thirties has died after being pulled out of the Hawkesbury River in Sydney on Christmas Day.

At about 5:15pm, emergency services responded to a report that an unconscious man had been retrieved from the river at Windsor Bridge in the city’s northwest.

Paramedics could not revive him, and his body was then removed from the scene by an air ambulance helicopter.

“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a man, believed to be in his thirties; however he died at the scene,” NSW Police said.

Officers are investigating and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

This is the second tragedy to strike the area in a matter of weeks.

Earlier this month, a 16-year-old boy went missing from Windsor Beach on the Hawkesbury River. A body was subsequently found after an extensive search.

Tragedy strikes in Victoria as well

There was another Christmas Day tragedy in the Victorian hotspot Lorne, where a teenager died after a body surfing incident at Cumberland River Beach.

The Herald Sun reports that three young men were body surfing when one of them began to struggle in the waves. The other two went to help, but also started to struggle.

All three eventually made it back to shore, where they collapsed.

Before emergency services arrived, an off-duty doctor and another onlooker rendered assistance. A 19-year-old man from St Albans died at the scene, while a second man was taken to a Melbourne hospital in serious condition.
