FAMILY members will be fighting over who wins the annual Christmas cracker tug of war now that they filled with more than just paper crowns and dad jokes.

Luxury bonbons, with an equally deluxe price tag, are stuffed with gifts you want to receive such as alcohol, perfume and cosmetics.

David Jones said extravagant bonbons were a big trend this year.

“They have been very popular with our customers and make a fantastic addition to your Christmas table, can be used as creative stocking fillers or as festive, showstopping gifts,” a spokesman said.

Fragrance brand Jo Malone London’s Ultimate Christmas Cracker will set you back $455, but it is chock full of cologne, candles and body cream.

Beauty brand Lancome loads its bon bon with mini cosmetics, including a skin serum, lipstick and scent for $45.

It’s not just limited to beauty products either. Dan Murphy’s sells six red crackers filled with mini bottles of gin for $62 and Peter Alexander stuffs its exploding parcels with his and her boxers for $50 or kids’ rompers for $30.

Australians estimated to spend $18b post-Christmas

Designer Peter Alexander believes festive bonbons should be part of every Christmas, but they don’t have to be a gag.

“It’s a nice surprise to get something you actually want in a cracker rather than a daggy hat or bad dad joke,” he said.

Abbey Hubble, 21, from Randwick agrees.

“They’re a great gift as they are all wrapped up and ready to give,” she said.
