As part of its All About Women festival next year, the most famous address in town will offer pickling and gin blending workshops.

Sydney Opera House head of talks and ideas, Edwina Throsby, said it makes sense to blend food crafts and feminism.

“We wanted to do more than just have people sit in an audience and listen. We wanted people to come together, start conversations and make connections and food is a really efficient way of doing that,” she said.

Throsby believes the strong female tradition of cooking together is political. It was rejected by second and third wave feminists but is now being embraced by the fourth wave.

“Each of the generations of feminists have had very clear social and political agendas that were a direct response to the times they lived in,” she said.

Cornersmith cafe founder Alex Elliott-Howery, who will be running the pickling workshops, agrees. She believes the traditional food crafts of our grandparents are being rediscovered because people crave a connection to food.
