‘Sovereign citizen’ hands over bizarre homemade licence as NSW Police question registration

Video has emerged of a self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” giving police a peculiar ID as she explains she’s “not under their membership” despite having a valid licence.

Sovereign citizen's' infuriating clash with cops

A self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” has had a bizarre run-in with police as she attempted to defend her “right” not to display number plates and handed over a very obviously fake identification card.

The exchange was captured in a video posted to Twitter, which was filmed by the woman herself.

It starts off showing the woman saying she’s “not part of the state” to a police officer who had pulled the woman over and asked her for identification.

The woman then explains her car was registered in Victoria, and hands over a homemade ID card which includes the words: “First Breath Location: Earth”.

The woman tells the cop she is “private … not under any public licence” and operates under her own “moral lore” - not the “law” of the government.

When the police officer asks where the car’s number plates are, the woman says she’s in the process of “going sovereign” and removing herself from the “corporation,” but adds the number plates are inside the car.

“Without the number plates and without the licence, I’m not actually under your membership,” the woman tells the police officer.

“So you can rightfully pull over anyone who has a registration plate in whatever state because they are registered into a membership … you end up in court and it gets thrown out because they say, ‘oh, you’ve lost your licence’, but if I don’t run under a licence, then there’s nothing to lose”.

The calm police officer explains the woman is free to hold her own beliefs, but that it is NSW law to display number plates correctly in order to drive on the road.

Clearly not satisfied with the DIY identification card provided, the cop asks the woman for her Victorian driver’s licence, which she provides.

Throughout the video, the woman looks directly camera and says phrases such as: “The po-pos are over there doing some checks, whatever that means” as well as “I’m not property of the state so they can’t take me”.

Near the end of the five-minute video, a man can be heard asking if the woman can leave if she puts the number plates on, to which the officer says she is facing fines regardless but she can drive with the plates properly displayed.

The video sparked a mix of outrage and sadness on Twitter, with one person writing: “I don’t belong to your corporation and live under my own sovereign state, but here are my Vic number plates for my registered vehicle and my current Vic driver’s licence”.

Another person wrote that it was scary how she believed everything she said, while a third comment read: “This is genuinely sad”.

Many people commented on how well the police officer handled the situation.
