Two charged after police officer allegedly stabbed with a homemade spear in south west Sydney
Two men have been charged after a police officer, 24, was allegedly stabbed and slashed with a homemade spear in Sydney on Monday.
Two men have been charged after a police officer in Sydney was allegedly stabbed in the hand and slashed in the neck.
The 24-year-old officer had to undergo surgery after being stabbed in the neck and arm with a “crude” homemade spear in Sydney’s southwest.
The officer, identified as Constable Jacob Vella was taken to hospital in a serious condition but is now stable after undergoing emergency surgery for his wounds.
He was allegedly stabbed by the son of a man he was seeking to arrest on a warrant while attending a property with his partner, Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell told the media earlier.
The plain-clothed officers were confronted inside the Sadleir home by a 27-year-old, who then allegedly stabbed Const Vella in the hand and slashed him on the neck.
The man has now been charged with wounding person with intent to resist arrest, wound police officer executing duty reckless as to actual bodily harm, wilfully obstruct officer in execution of duty, assault officer in execution of duty, and resist officer in execution of duty.
Another older man aged 58 years old, who was the subject of an outstanding warrant, was also arrested at the scene.
He has been charged with use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, assault officer in execution of duty, and the outstanding warrant.
Both have been refused bail and are expected to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday, June 12.
Another older man, who was also inside the home at the time, is speaking with investigators.
“The weapon that was used to stab the police officer was a crude homemade weapon, which comprised of a steel shaft on the end of a wooden stick, as I said it was a crude weapon,” Mr Thurtell said.
“We’ve seen a number of incidents where officers have been threatened or wounded.
“I’ve said before it is a dangerous profession, there are people out there who don’t respect the police uniform and think it is all right to attack officers.
“We’re hoping for the good and speedy recovery of the young police officer.”
The attack took place in Sadleir, 37 kilometres southwest of the Sydney CBD, just before 7am on Monday.
Police earlier told news.com.au the officer was on duty at the time of the attack.
Police officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command attended a home in Heckenberg Ave, NSW Police said in a statement today.
The alleged attacker was arrested at the scene. His 58-year-old father, who was named on the warrant for failing to appear in court over breaches of a community corrections order, is also in custody.
The pair are known to police but not for violence-related matters, Mr Thurtell said.
A third man, who was inside the home at the time, is speaking with investigators.
Const Vella has only been in the force since April 2017.
The Sadleir street was cordoned off at 10am on Monday as investigations continued.
Neighbour Jodie Pritchard told The Daily Telegraph she’d been smoking a morning cigarette when she saw police this morning.
“I saw one man with handcuffs on held by police out the front of the house,” Ms Pritchard said.
She said she didn’t know the man, who has only lived on the street for 12 months.
