A driver has been caught travelling almost 100km/h over the speed limit, weaving in an out of traffic on a road in Sydney’s inner south.

After being pulled over, the driver denied speeding to police and when tested for drugs was found to be high on cocaine and methamphetamine, according to NSW Police.

On Tuesday, Botany Bay Highway Patrol were recording drivers’ speeds on the roadside at General Holmes Drive, Mascot, at 10.51pm.

Police recorded an Audi RS3 travelling at 169km/h “as it weaved in and out of traffic, dangerously close to other vehicles”. The area, including the airport tunnel has a speed limit of 70km/h.

The male driver of the Audi, 42, was later stopped at Kyeemagh, where he told police, “I wasn’t speeding.” The driver was not carrying his licence at the time.

Police carried out a roadside drug test that returned a positive reading for both cocaine and methamphetamine.

The driver, who was on parole for a separate incident, was arrested and taken to Mascot Police Station. He was drug tested again and returned a secondary positive reading for the two drugs.

The driver was charged with driving at a speed dangerous to the public, class A motor vehicle exceed speed 45km/h and not carry driver’s licence. His licence was also suspended on the spot.

Police indicated further charges relating to the positive drug readings were likely.
