Inmates charged after riot at Sydney’s Parklea Correctional Centre
A group of prisoners who allegedly caused a riot that damaged the interior and exterior of a Sydney prison have been charged.
The group of inmates that allegedly caused a riot and damaged a correctional facility in Sydney’s northwest earlier this week will front court over the incident.
The four men – aged 20, 23 and two aged 22 – were transferred from Parklea Correctional Centre to Riverstone police station on Friday where they were each charged with rioting.
The incident, which started about 2pm on Monday, led to a number of prisoners spotted clambering onto the roof of the jail.
Aerial images also showed flames and smoke bursting through the roof of the facility as the shirtless inmates climbed across the top of the building.
Police vehicles were also seen parked below.
NSW Police allege a number of inmates caused extensive damage to the inside and outside of a correctional facility.
The incident was resolved by correctional officers and referred to Riverstone police to investigate the incident with the assistance of North West Metropolitan Region detectives.
The quartet are expected to face Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
Police said the investigation was ongoing.
