A man has been charged with the murder of a grandfather only a day after police offered a $500,000 reward for information leading to a break in the case.

Duncan Campbell, then aged 58, was last seen on February 4, 2024 in Albany St, Coffs Harbour on the NSW north coast.

When he was unable to be located or contacted, he was reported missing to police on February 9.

Mr Campbell’s death was originally treated as not suspicious after his body was found near his campsite on John Champion Way on February 12; however, further medical examination revealed he had been murdered.

Police appealed for information and offered a $500,000 reward for information related to Mr Campbell’s murder on Tuesday.

“He was a loving father and grandfather who fell on hard times in recent years that led to him sleeping rough,” Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said.

“This is a vulnerable man who wouldn’t hurt a fly who has found himself in really unfortunate circumstances.”

After further inquiries, the accused was arrested and charged on Wednesday afternoon.

Police allege the man bashed Mr Campbell to death with a steel pole between Sunday, February 4, 2024 and Monday, February 5, 2024.

The accused was refused bail and will appear in the local court on Thursday.
