Coronavirus: Sydney man allegedly spits on members of public, police and paramedics

A man will face court today accused of spitting at multiple people, including police officers, in an alleged rampage in Sydney last night.

A 27-year-old man is due to face court in Sydney today accused of abusing members of the public, assaulting police and spitting on an officer and a paramedic.

Police were called to Crown St, Woolloomooloo on Friday night to reports a man was “running through traffic hitting cars, then abusing shoppers at a nearby supermarket”, NSW Police said in a statement.

Officers arrested the man after a short struggle when he allegedly spat in their direction.

Police will allege he then spat on another man while at Kings Cross police station.

Police were called to the scene in Sydney’s Kings Cross last night.

The man was then taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he allegedly spat on a police officer and a NSW Ambulance paramedic.

He is also accused of kicking an officer twice in the chest.

The Potts Point man has been charged with 10 offences including three counts of not complying with a noticed direction regarding spitting/coughing COVID-19.

The man could face fines of up to $15,000 under new NSW measures against coughing and spitting on frontline workers.

The NSW government announced the $5000 on-the-spot fine last month for people who coughed or spat on a health worker, police, pharmacist, paramedics or other public official.

“Every day our doctors and nurses, police and paramedics put their health and safety on the line to protect us, and a threat to them, is a threat to us,” Health Minister Brad Hazzard said at the time.

However, police told news.com.au the man may avoid the new fines, depending on the decision of the magistrate — but he could be facing even more severe consequences.

The man has also been charged with two counts of common assault and two counts of assaulting police officers in execution of duty, among other things.

He is due before Parramatta Bail Court today.
