Man allegedly armed with machete charged after nine-hour siege at Carramar
A man was allegedly armed with a machete when he caused a nine-hour standoff with police while a woman was allegedly inside a house.
A western Sydney man has been charged after a nearly nine-hour standoff with police, who allege he was threatening them with a machete.
The alleged ordeal began at 1pm on Thursday when officers were called to a home on Denison Street in Carramar after bystanders reported seeing a man allegedly armed with a long knife outside the property.
When police arrived, the 35-year-old man allegedly threatened them before arming himself with knives, including a machete.
Police allege he then entered the home where a 22-year-old woman was inside.
Officers, including specialise negotiators, spent almost nine hours trying to convince the man to come outside again.
Police stormed the home just before 10pm, tasered the man and arrested him.
He was taken to hospital with minor injuries before being transported to Fairfield police station and charged with using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and two counts of failing to comply with an extended/interim supervision order.
The man was refused bail and will appear at Fairfield Local Court on Friday.
“The woman inside the unit at the time was uninjured and assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene,” NSW Police said in a statement.
Earlier, pictures captured by 9 News showed officers in tactical gear holding what looked like a circle saw.
