Body found in car near Umina Beach on Central Coast
Police are investigating and a man is under police guard in hospital after a body was found in a car near a popular beach.
Homicide detectives are investigating after a man’s body was found in a car near a beach north of Sydney.
Police found the man’s body covered in stab wounds in a vehicle in a Trafalgar Ave carpark at Umina Beach on the Central Coast about 3.15am on Monday.
The man is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 40s.
A man in his 30s handed himself in to police at 7.30am and he was taken into custody.
In a press conference on Monday afternoon, police said the man was a local and believed to have known the deceased.
He is now in hospital under police guard, receiving treatment for lacerations.
Brisbane Water Police District crime manager Detective Inspector Paul Laksa said police were alerted to the man’s body after receiving a call from a person believed to be “an associate” of the deceased.
He told reporters it was still too early for investigators to confirm whether this was a “random attack”; however, he said the dead man had an “insignificant history” with police.
Although Mr Laksa acknowledged the confronting nature of the crime scene, he believed police had made good progress on their investigation.
“I think the main thing is that we don’t have someone out in the public at large,” he said.
NSW Police are urging anyone with information to contact Gosford Police on 02 4323 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
“What I would say is that there’s been numerous investigations conducted today and I just encourage anyone that does have any knowledge or might have information in regards to this (to give local detectives or Crime Stoppers) a call,” Mr Laksa said.
