Elderly man seriously assaulted outside polling booth in Inner West Sydney
A man in his 80s remains in a serious condition after being assaulted outside a polling booth.
An elderly man is in a serious condition after allgedly being assaulted by a teenager outside an early voting centre in Sydney’s Inner West.
Police were called to Ashfield Town Hall on Liverpool Road at about 1pm on Wednesday, as the quiet suburb was rocked by the alleged assault.
Believed to be in his 80s, the man was in a serious condition when he was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, after being treated at the scene.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested by police at the scene, and has been taken to Burwood police station where he is assisting with the investigation.
A crime scene has been established.
“The AEC is aware of this incident,” an AEC spokesperson said to NewsWire.
“The incident occurred outside of our polling place and did not involve any AEC staff. Voting operations are continuing at the pre-poll voting centre in Ashfield,” the statement continued.
“As the matter is being investigated by NSW Police it would not be appropriate for us to comment further.”
