Rapper Illy’s cousin Daniel Ngawhika-Whittaker faces court over alleged armed robbery

The cousin of rapper Illy, who lost both his legs five years ago in a train accident, has been charged with a string of armed robbery offences.

The cousin of rapper, Illy, has faced court over a string of armed robbery allegations, years after he lost both his legs in a horrific train accident.

Daniel Ngawhika-Whittaker briefly faced Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday charged with two counts of robbery armed with an offensive weapon and one count of using an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Court documents allege that between 11pm on January 26 and 1am on January 27, the 20-year-old stole apple iPhones off two people while armed with a knife.

He attended court with three family members, but his case was adjourned two weeks due to continuing negotiations between the parties.

According to court records, Ngawhika-Whittaker was granted bail on May 1 for the alleged robbery, after forfeiting a $2,000 surety.

In 2019, the teenager made headlines after he miraculously survived a train accident in which he lost both his legs, fractured his skull and lost function in his right hand due to nerve damage.

The frightening incident saw him hit by a train in the south Sydney suburb of Kirawee in the early morning of March 4, leaving him bleeding on the tracks.

More than a dozen paramedics stepped in to save his life.

At the time, his multi-platinum selling artist cousin Illy urged his fans to contribute money to a GoFundMe page raising money for Ngawhika-Whittaker’s recovery.

Under his bail conditions, he is required to report to Sutherland Police Station daily and not leave his home unless in the company of his parents or youth worker.

He is also required not to go within five kilometres of Woolooware Train Station, not approach or contact any complainant or prosecution witness and not consume drugs or alcohol.

Ngawhika-Whittaker is yet to enter pleas on the charges and is next due to face court on September 28.
