TENNIS BAD boy Nick Kyrgios has had a few issues with his temper during the Australian Open, but last night it was a tiny pair of shorts that nearly brought the Aussie undone.
Starting the match against unseeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay in a pair of white shorts, it soon became evident they were a little on the tight side and Kyrgios, 20, had trouble getting a second ball into his pocket during his service games.
The oncourt muttering that has become a trademark of the up-and-coming star is usually directed at players or officials, but last night it was obviously aimed at whoever laid out his uniform ahead of the second round match-up on Hisence Arena.
It became too much for Kyrgios towards the end of the second set and he was granted permission by the umpire to head into the change rooms and into a pair of shorts that would better fit his balls.
The change into the new, roomier black shorts paid off for the Aussie whose first-serve percentage immediately went up leading to commentator Jim Courier labelling them ‘magic’.
He want on to beat Cuevas 6-4 7-5 7-6 (7-2).
After the match Kyrgios didn’t want to focus too much on the wardrobe malfunction but did have a short spray.
“It was an absolute mix-up, it was a circus,” he said during his post-match interview.
“I’m not going to talk too much about it, but it was just a massive mix-up and that’s just part of the challenges you face.”
Kyrgios was in fine form on the court but he was once again showing his bratty side when he took a swipe at a linesman during the match.
“Is he awake or not? It’s the second game of the match? Is he awake?” he asked chair umpire Carlos Ramos.
Surprisingly Ramos agreed with him.
“He is a awake, but I agree with you, it was a clear mistake,” he said.
Interestingly, Kyrgios took aim at his support group during the match, angrily calling for them to quit their encouragement.
“I don’t want it any more, don’t clap, don’t say anything,” he said.
“Don’t say a word.”
During his first round match against Pablo Carreno Busta, Kyrgios was fined $4370 for an audible obscenity and he copped a 28-day suspended sentence for a verbal spray against French Open champion Stan Wawrinka at the Montreal Masters in August last year.
Kyrgios will now face Czech star Tomas Berdych in the third round.
