Broken glass, damaged bus panels, and staff feeling unsafe are the reasons an Alice Springs bus charter company has given for a two-week route suspension into some remote communities.

In a statement released on Thursday, Bush Bee bus services suspended routes into South Australian Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands – effective immediately – and said the service would be resumed May 4.

“In the last week we have had three buses pelted with rocks, breaking glass and damaging panels and endangering our staff and passengers,” the statement said.

“Such ongoing violence will result in our unique service being cancelled.”

The Bush Bee statement then pushed for community members to “discourage further violence” and to help “understand this behaviour is unacceptable.”

An APY Lands spokesman called for unity and a stand against violent actions within the community.

“This suspension is a critical reminder that violence against public services affects everyone,” he said.

“The continuation of such services depends on the co-operation and behaviour of the community.

“Let’s work together to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all. Respect the Bush Bee drivers – they are here for your service and safety.”
