‘Disgusted’: Senator Price slams disturbing footage of 16yo bashed by gang

“Disturbing” footage of a 16-year-old being beaten by a gang of 10 females in the middle of the street has been slammed by politicians.

Community leaders demand action after girl viciously attacked by youths in Alice Springs

Disturbing footage has captured the moment a 16-year-old girl was brutally beaten by a gang of 10 females in a “disgraceful” attack in Alice Springs.

The footage, obtained by Sky News, shows the teenager being kicked and stomped on in the middle of the street about 3am on Saturday, March 16.

According to Sky News, the attackers also attempted to strip the teenager naked.

Northern Territory Police said a brawl had earlier broken out involving up to 50 people along Gregory Terrace and Hartley Street. However, the 16-year-old was not involved in the brawl before she attacked, according to police.

The teenager suffered serious chest injuries and was taken to hospital.

NT Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price said she was left “disgusted” and “utterly disturbed” by the footage when addressing the incident in the Senate on Monday.

“These women, I could hear in the video, are Warlpiri women. I am a Warlpiri woman. I am utterly disturbed to see this kind of behaviour,” she said.

Senator Price said she had been informed the attack may have been a case of traditional “cultural payback”.

“I want this chamber, and the Australian public to know that traditional cultural payback, otherwise known as vigilantism, has no place in our society in 2024,” she said.

“We have a situation of crime on our streets in the Northern Territory and we ignore the fact that traditional culture plays into this, because we’re all too scared.

“This romanticism needs to stop if we are to support our most marginalised in our communities.”

Senator Price called on Warlpiri elders to condemn the violent behaviour and the Northern Territory government to “pull your socks up and do better” to protect those who are vulnerable.

“There is no place for this violence on our streets,” she said. “Enough is enough.”

Speaking to Sky News, NT Chief Minister Eva Lawler further condemned the incident, labelling it “absolutely disgraceful”.

She told the outlet she had met with Police Commissioner Michael Murphy to discuss the immediate deployment of extra police from the Territory Safety Division to Alice Springs.

Yipirinya School principal Gavin Morris confirmed the incident was “once again in relation to payback”, telling Sky News it was the worst footage he had seen in 25 years.

“It’s in relation to revenge, a tit for tat between community members around a spiralling out-of-control crisis point of escalation in behaviour, which is getting hidden behind this cultural theme of payback,” Mr Morris said.

Police said the 16-year-old took herself to Alice Springs Hospital after the attack, before leaving to the community of Yuendumu. She was later taken back to hospital for treatment.

Senior Sergeant Michael Curtiss said the violence “was completely unacceptable and CCTV shows 30 witnesses who have yet to come forward and give a statement to police”.

“We are urging those with information to do the right thing and make contact,” he said.

It comes amid a spate of recent crimes in the Northern Territory, including an anti-crime campaigner who had his home invaded by a group of youths earlier this month.

YouTube personality and reformed criminal Anthony Lees, better known as Spanian, also shined a light on the chaos unfolding on the streets of Alice Spring in a recent YouTube video.

Footage from the streets after dark showed locals brawling on numerous occasions, another stomped on a woman’s head on the sidewalk, and two men went at it with blades in the middle of a road.

At one point, a woman yelled: “I think you need security.”

Another local indigenous man told Spanian: “We’re living like s**t.”

In Spanian’s words: “This is worse than Sydney, believe me.”

“There were punch-ons non-stop … this is just normal?” he asked locals.

“One hundred per cent,” they responded

Any witnesses to the assault are urged to contact police on 131 444.
