Federal election 2019: Corangamite electorate, where Sarah Henderson faces Libby Coker
Labor has taken a crucial seat from the Liberal Party in Victoria following a “nightmarish” redistribution.
Labor has snatched the seat of Corangamite from the Liberals.
News.com.au and Sky News are calling the Victorian electorate for the ALP’s Libby Coker.
The last time Corangamite went to the polls, the Liberals held it with ease, scoring 53.1 per cent of votes compared with Labor’s mere 46.9 per cent.
But it’s a completely different story today, following a cruel redistribution which saw Liberal MP Sarah Henderson’s margin whittled down to just 0.03 per cent making it the Coalition’s most marginal seat.
That means it hasn’t taken much for the seat to fall into Ms Coker’s hands.
The Daily Telegraph reported Ms Coker appeared visibly confident out on the hustings today.
But this week, Ms Henderson insisted the battle to retain her seat “is a battle we can win” during an interview with Sky News.
Earlier this week, Ms Henderson admitted she was facing “the biggest fight” of her life.
Writing in the Geelong Advertiser this week, Ms Henderson, the Assistant Minister for Housing and Disability Services, made a last-ditch appeal to voters, reminding them of her achievements and arguing her case to “continue to deliver for Corangamite”, which is believed to be a bellwether seat of the 2019 federal election.
“My focus is to get things done — major infrastructure projects like the Great Ocean Road, the Princes Highway duplication, Avalon’s new international terminal and the ABS National Data Centre,” she wrote.
“Working together, we have secured funding for dozens of sporting and surf clubs and community facilities, as well as 22 mobile phone base stations and $30 million for two new pools in Torquay and the Bellarine.”
She also claimed Labor “abandoned Geelong by delivering fast rail funding only to the Gold Coast”.
It has been a brutal campaign for the divisive Ms Henderson, who has had many election signs defaced over the weeks.

Ms Henderson swiped the electorate from Labor’s Darren Cheeseman in 2013, but following that nightmare redistribution, the ALP are now confident Ms Coker — who also ran for the seat at the last election — has what it takes to win it back.
Other candidates included Ian Erskine from the Rise Up Australia Party,
Simon Northeast from The Greens, Naomi Adams from the Animal Justice Party, independent Damien Cole, Harvey Nell from United Australia Party and Mandy Grimley from Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party.
