Police in Perth are hunting a man who burst into the home of a sleeping woman and her child, brandishing a hammer, before stealing her car and traumatising the pair so badly they’ve moved out.

It happened about 5.10am on Sunday when the woman, aged in her 40s, and her four-year-old child were sleeping in their Clarkson home in Perth’s outer-northern suburbs

Detective Senior Constable Jamie DeFazio said the woman was woken by a man shouting at her property’s rear glass door, before smashing his way through it, and threatening the woman and her child with a hammer he was wielding.

“The woman, who was understandably terrified, offered no resistance,” Constable DeFazio said.

“Despite this, the man proceeded to brandish the hammer above his head while the victim feared for the safety of both herself and her child.”

The man then stole the woman’s car keys and drove off in her silver Hyundai Accent.

WA Police have released CCTV from the incident, showing a man wearing a hoodie-style jumper and baseball cap approaching the property, smashing through the glass sliding door and of the car leaving the victim’s garage.

Constable DeFazio said the mother and her child have been left traumatised.

“As a result, she has moved from the house temporarily while she comes to terms with what’s happened,” he told media on Tuesday.

“It’s not a nice situation to go through and it’s going to impact her life for a while.”

Anyone with information in relation to the identity of the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or to make a report online.
