Snowfalls smashes Australia, proving winter far from over

Snow has blanketed parts of Australia in a remarkable weather event, with one image showing how much actually fell.

Antarctic blast brings snow to NSW, Victoria, Tasmania

Locals in eastern state regional towns woke up to snowfall and icy conditions, with temperatures dropping to minus figures in winter’s last week.

A striking image from the Hotham Alpine resort, in Victoria, showed just how deep the snow was with a skier standing by a parked car.

Forecasters are predicting the cold front that brought widepread rain, snow and frost has now moved over the Tasman Sea.

They say the worst of the wild weather is over but the current conditions will bring hazardous surf.

Hotham Alpine Resort, a popular ski destination in Victoria, saw cars covered in snow, but the weather is providing “ideal conditions” for holiday makers in the region.

Despite the disruptions to day-to-day life, some have found the snow to be a “magical experience”.

In a video shared on TikTok, owners of an airbnb in southeastern NSW have shown the magnificent view of their snow covered property.

For millions of people across NSW, Victoria and South Australia, the snowfalls are causing hazardous conditions on major highways.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has warned people to drive with caution, as the roads may be unpredictable.

Parts of the Great Western Highway have been closed off between Sydney and Lithgow, as -2 degree temperatures brought black ice and wild conditions, posing a threat to motorists.

The NSW Bureau of Meteorology said there would be sunshine in NSW, but temperatures would drop below average.

Matilda Spooner, owner of River K Lodge, a 40 acre property in Jindabyne near the Snowy Mountains, posted a video of the snowfall, saying she was so excited when she woke up to it.

“First time it’s snowed at our house,” she commented, showing off her “alpine rental retreat”.

“Wow, it looks so magical!” one person reacted.

Jindabyne, near the border of NSW and Victoria, saw around 20cm of snowfall.

Residents in South Australia were shocked by the freezing temperatures in the mid north, with snow falling in Mt Remarkable.

Adelaide has experienced its wettest August in four years.
