The most romantic day of the year is almost upon us, and according to new data citizens of one Aussie state will be more likely than the rest of us to show their love with a steamy text message this Valentine’s Day.

Vodafone has released a survey of the sexting habits of Australians on Valentine’s Day, titled the Red Hot Love Index.

The data showed on Valentine’s Day 2023 more than 13.8 million calls were made and over 58 million texts were sent. This is a 14 per cent increase year-on-year.

However, the data revealed one in five Australians — with men making up the bulk of that group — were planning on sending a risqué text on February 14.

Of those planning to send a dirty text message, a fifth of men are planning to hit up as many as seven people while 83 per cent of women are planning on sexting up to three people.

But, it doesn’t stop there. The data also showed where in Australia had the most people ready to get freaky on Valentine’s Day.

The Northern Territory had the most people ready to expose themselves digitally, with 43 per cent of people preparing to hit send on a sext on Wednesday, and about 67 per cent of those ready to do so planning to sext up to three people and a further third up to seven people.

But, in a devastating turn of events, 43 per cent of NT residents have had a sexting mishap with 43 per cent receiving an accidental sext. A quarter have said they have accidentally sent a sext to their friend, sibling or colleague.

ACT plans to take the reins when it comes to sending thirst traps, with over a quarter planning to do so, followed by Tasmanians at under a quarter and a fifth of both South Australians and NSW residents.

Aussies between the ages of 25 and 35 are the ones most likely to send a third trap this Valentine’s Day while one in two people aged 18 to 34 have used emojis while sexting.

“Our insights show more Australians are showing love to their family, friends and loved ones on Valentine’s Day. It isn’t about red roses and heart-shaped chocolates anymore, Australians are connecting in meaningful ways by making a phone call or sending a text to show their appreciation,” a Vodafone spokesperson said.

“We know people sometimes like to show their love by sending a more cheeky message on Valentine’s Day. Sending anything to the wrong person can be embarrassing and career limiting, so we encourage customers to triple check the recipient is a consenting adult before pressing send on that message.”
