An American football WAG is copping criticism after admitting she dated her husband’s “back up” when he refused to commit during their early courtship – stating she did it to deliberately “piss him off”.

Kelly Stafford, who is married to NFL star Matthew Stafford, appeared on the Off the Vine podcast where made the revelation during a candid chat with host Kaitlyn Bristowe.

During the episode, which aired Tuesday, the NFL wife revealed she dated her husband’s college backup quarterback at the beginning of their relationship in an attempt to make him jealous.

The pair got together while studying at the University of Georgia. She said she decided to date her husband’s rival after she realised he was only interested a casual relationship.

But her surprise confession hasn’t been well received, with some questioning why Kelly – who now shares four kids with her husband – would willingly share such “hurtful” information, the New York Post reports.

“Long story short, it wasn’t that cute of a relationship at first. I hated him. I loved him. I dated the backup to piss him off, which worked,” she said.

“He was the bad boy too, Matthew’s so sweet and a Southern gentleman and all that stuff. And the backup was the complete opposite, and it upset him.”

Is Taylor Swift re-branding the WAG tag?

The football WAG didn’t stop there, giving jaw-dropping details of how she won the back the star quarterback, who plays for the Los Angeles Rams.

“They lived in the same dorm room because athletes lived in the same dorm room. He would see my car there. At one point he waited and followed me into the car,” she shared.

“I was like, ‘This is amazing, it’s working.’ I was like, ‘Get out of my car.’ He was like, ‘He’s not right for you.’ I was like, ‘What? You can’t tell me that’.”

But Kelly, who has been married to Stafford since 2015, has attracted a lot of negative attention following her intimate revelation, with American sports journalist Stephen A. Smith weighing in on the comments.

“I’m not casting any aspersions on her character or anything like that. I would never disrespect Matthew Stafford’s wife or anybody else’s wife,” Smith said on his podcast, according to a follow up report by the New York Post.

“I’m just making the point, what would make you think that’s OK? Why would you do that?”

Social media users have also weighed in, with some stating it showed a “lack of respect” for their relationship.

“Some things are better left unsaid. This is the thing that should have been kept to herself,” one argued.

“It’s crazy she did that… not a good look at all,” another wrote.

While one agreed: “She shared a story that she probably should’ve kept private.”
