Kat Mehajer wedding: Council says no to blocking street for extravaganza

SALIM Mehajer’s extravagant wedding saw an entire street closed off. But his youngest sister’s plans to do the same have hit a snag.

IT WAS the lavish wedding that propelled him to national stardom.

But if the family of Salim Mehajer think an entire street will be shut down to accommodate another such event, they’ll be sorely disappointed.

Plans for a big wedding celebration for Salim’s youngest sister Khadijeh, otherwise known as Kat, hit a snag after the council he used to work for blocked a proposed street closure.

Kat, who tied the knot with Ibraham ‘Abby’ Sakalaki in a small ceremony last weekend, was reportedly planning a more lavish affair this weekend, according to The Daily Telegraph.

However, Cumberland Council, which formed after Auburn and Holroyd merged in May, has put a stop to those plans.

A council spokesman confirmed to news.com.au that inquiries were made on behalf of the Mehajer family to close a street in the Cumberland local government area.

He also confirmed the closure was for the purposes of conducting a wedding procession involving dozens of vehicles.

“They were advised, based on the information provided, that it was unlikely that consent would be given,” the spokesman said.

He said the council did not receive an application to close the street and no such approval was given, warning an unauthorised procession would not go down well with authorities.

“Cumberland Council is now cooperating with the NSW Police on this matter to ensure that the amenity of surrounding residents is protected should wedding party vehicular activity occur that is not authorised, particularly given previous experience,” the spokesman said.

“Cumberland Council will support the NSW Police in their efforts to manage this issue.”

Salim’s own wedding to wife Aysha last year saw a street in Lidcombe shut down in a lavish display which included four helicopters, a jet, a sea plane and a motorcade of luxury sports cars in the western Sydney suburb.

The unauthorised street closure earned him a slap on the wrist and a $220 fine.

Less than 12 months later, the relationship appears all but over.

Either way it seem’s Kat’s brother is excited about her big day, revealing there’s just one more sleep to go in an Instagram post.

However it seems the western Sydney family is no stranger to holding such extravagant events.

Kat had a lavish bridal shower in June, posting a series of snaps to social media with the bride-to-be pictured in at least three different dresses.

Salim’s wife Aysha didn’t appear to be at the no-expenses-spared event and hasn’t been seen in public with her husband for weeks.

Another sister, Fatima Elkheir, reportedly spent $10,000 on a princess-themed party to celebrate her daughter’s first birthday last month.

The family splashed out on a five-tiered birthday cake and 100 different desserts for the tot’s big event.
