Former WAG reveals why she kept her ex husband’s surname
Former WAG Nadia Bartel reveals why she kept her ex husband Jimmy Bartel’s surname after the couple called it quits in 2020.
The former wife of an AFL star has revealed why she chose to keep her ex husband’s surname.
Nadia Bartel has been divorced from Jimmy Bartel for almost four years but the fashion designer has kept his last name.
Taking to TikTok, Nadia - who’s maiden name was Coppolino - responded to a question from a follower that said: “Kept the surname I see.”
Nadia, who owns the label Henne, said she gets this comment daily and, while she shouldn’t have to justify why, told her followers the reason she hasn’t returned to her maiden name.
“[Comments] have been happening pretty much every day since my marriage ended,” Nadia told her followers.
She said she was sick of the question and being trolled by it.
“The fact of the matter is I want the same last name as my two small boys, I am very traditional like that,” she said.
“I don’t see why I personally have to have a different name to my small children because my marriage ended.”
She said she wouldn’t go into the details of why and how it ended, but she said her upbringing and cultural position meant she wanted to keep the last name she’s had for the better part of a decade.
“This might change in the future. As they get older, I might feel differently about it,” she said, adding she loved her maiden name and it was a big deal for her to change it to Bartel.
She said she didn’t understand why people had such a big deal about her having Bartel as a surname.
Nadia acknowledged there would be many women out there who feel the opposite and can’t wait to revert to their maiden name.
It’s not the first time the mother-of-two has had to reveal why she has chosen to keep her ex-husband’s last name.
The 38-year-old said in 2020 that it may have been a different story if she hadn’t had children with Bartel.
In 2019, the Herald Sun confirmed the couple parted ways after a rumours began circling when the fashion designer and the former Geelong Cats player abruptly unfollowed each other on Instagram.
Reports at the time also suggested the former couple were spotted without their wedding rings.
The pair first met at the 2008 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and got engaged in 2012 on a private beach in Mexico.
Nadia and the former AFL star share two boys – Henley and Aston – together.
