Anthony Albanese shares passionate kiss with Jodie Haydon
Anthony Albanese didn’t hold back in his celebrations after cruising to a crushing election win.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his fiancee Jodie Haydon shared a passionate kiss while standing on the podium to declare victory at the election on Saturday.
Mr Albanese is the first prime minister to secure consecutive electoral wins since 2004, and while addressing supporters at the at the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club in, Ms Haydon and Mr Albanese's son Nathan stood by his side.
The trio held hands and threw them up in victory while on the stage.
Ms Haydon, who has not revealed any details about her impending nuptials, bar the role of dog Toto, wore and oversized double breasted red blazer with a white shirt underneath, and a matching pair of wide leg trousers to show her support for the Labor Party.
It wasn’t too far a leap from her outfit earlier in the day, when she voted with the Prime Minister and his son at Marrickville West Public School, where she wore a more casual red blazer and black trousers.
While on stage during his victory speech, the pair shared a passionate kiss in a room full of Labor supporters. Mr Albanese also took the opportunity to thanks Ms Haydon for her support during the election.
“To my fiancee, Jodie Heydon. Probably wasn’t expecting for this to be in your life half a dozen years ago,” Mr Albanese quipped.
“I am so grateful for your support, your friendship and your love. You make me so happy. Which matters. You have my heart. I love you and I look forward to living our lives together.”
Mr Albanese and Ms Haydon met in 2020 at an event in Melbourne where the Labor Party leader was speaking. The staunch South Sydney supporter asked if there were any fellow supporters in the room, and Ms Haydon yelled, “Up the Rabbitohs”, Australian Woman’s Weekly reported.
He later introduced himself, and discovered that Ms Haydon lived in his electorate.
“We had what I thought would just be a drink at Young Henrys in Newtown, and we got on really well. That’s how it started,” he said.
Ahead of the election, Ms Haydon threw her support behind her husband-to-be and said it “won’t be a surprise” she’s voting Labor.
“Anthony understands the importance of conditions like flexible work so that families can balance their work demands and see their kids, families and friends,” she wrote for The Daily Telegraph.
“Anthony wants women to fulfil their dreams and aspirations. He walks the walk on equality in his professional life and at home.
“Anthony is tough, and we need our leaders to be tough, because the world is an uncertain place.”
The scenes at Liberal Headquarters were very different, with Opposition leader Peter Dutton taking to the stage with his wife Kirilly and their two sons Tom and Harry. Rebecca, Mr Dutton’s daughter with a former partner, was also at the event.
Mr Dutton conceded not only the election but his seat of Dickson.
The family were co-ordinated in their outfits, all wearing a deep navy blue for Mr Dutton’s concession speech. Mrs Dutton looked on at her husband, who she met in 2001, with watery eyes after initially taking to the stage with a smile on her face.
After her husband took ownership of the party’s loss, he was quickly embraced by his two sons and his wife.
Ahead of polls opening on Saturday, Mr Dutton took to X to share a message from his wife about why he should be the person Australians voted for.
“Above all else, Peter is a listener. Whether he is with family, friends, residents in Dickson, or the many Australians he meets as a parliamentarian, he is attentive and curious,” she said.
“He isn’t one of those politicians who speaks over people or tells people how it is. He asks questions. He wants to hear other people’s stories and perspectives. And that’s what makes him attuned to the views and values of everyday Australians.”
She said her husband had held some of the toughest jobs in government, such as Home Affairs and Defence Minister.
“From his time as a police officer through to today, he is driven by a desire to protect others and a clear sense of morality. He knows there is right and wrong, and good and evil, in the world,” she said.
“Despite his roles and workload, he has always been a wonderful husband and a dedicated and present father to his children.”
