Identical twins Azra and Aisha Mian, 20, have revealed an “odd” and “unexplainable” twin phenomenon with a claim that has since been backed by twins world wide.

The TikToker sisters from the US, who combined have over 11.6 million followers, shocked The Good Boys Podcast hosts Toddy Smith and Brett Bassock when they opened up about a unique experience they share as identical twins.

The Mian Twins said they cannot and will not hug each other, something that is a fairly common practise among family members.

“We don’t hug each other,” said Azra.

“It’s not like oh she’s my sister ew I don’t want to hug her, it’s this weird thing about twins.

“I’ll hug my other sisters and like okay, whatever, but with her specifically (Aisha), I can’t hug her because I feel like I’m not hugging a presence.”

Aisha supported her sister’s comments saying hugging Azra physically felt like she was hugging herself.

“It’s so weird … I feel like the touch of your skin, when I’m holding it, it doesn’t feel like there’s anything, like your hand feels like my hand.

“We’ve said this for years.”

“I feel like I am hugging no one when we are hugging,” said Azra.

Podcast hosts, Smith and Bassock were left in awe following this wowing announcement.

“Oh my god … I think I am going to cry right now … this is bringing tears to my eyes,” said Toddy Smith.

“That’s a trip.”

His co-host revelled in the group’s amazement, questioning the accuracy in this claim.

“What, I’ve never heard of this … is this real?” he said.

While the hosts struggled to grapple with and believe this new information, other social media users and backed the Mian Twins’ claims in the comments of a video of the podcast on TikTok.

Identical twin YouTubers Brooklyn and Bailey McKnight said “it’s so true though”, on the post, alongside other TikTok users.

“I have an identical twin sister and I can say I’ve never been able to put it in words but this is exactly how it feels,” said user Jackie Roonie.

“Twin flames (split souls) basically they are the same soul,” said another social media user.

One user said touching their sibling’s hand felt like they were holding their own.

“It feels like I have a clone.”

Other followers of the podcast said they felt the complete opposite.

“I’m an identical twin and we feel the opposite. She is my “soulmate” so hugging her just feels like hugging home/feels good/calming” said Julia Ruzevich.

“I 100 per cent disagree. I feel like we’re more connected when we hug,” said TikTok user Mackenzie Webb.

“When we were really young we couldn’t sleep unless we were touching.”

Associate Professor/Clinical Psychologist at Swinburne University, Katie Wood said the Mian twins’ case is “a little bit of an unusual one” and something she had not had reported to her before.

“Identical twins are a genetic replica of each other … if you’re hugging your twin it’s like you’re hugging yourself,” she said.

“Each individual twin would experience that differently, in terms of what that hug represents in the context of twinship.

“There’s a lack of differentiation between the twin and co-twin, the sameness is over exaggerated.”

The twinship expert said “identical twins report their own unique experiences that may not be replicated for other twins, someone else could relate but each twin’s experience can be different within that twinship”.

While the experiences of each twin is largely unique, Associate Professor Wood said often the majority of identical twins will report an incident where they do not have to explain a certain thought, feeling or concept to their twin, they just understand it without language.

“There’s nothing magical about it … there’s an unconditional understanding within the twinship that doesn’t require an explanation,” she said.
