Mum, 40, ‘always’ mistaken for 21-year-old daughter

A 40-year-old mum has spilled the “secret” to her youthful looks after “always” being mistaken as her daughter’s sister. Can you tell them apart?

Quest for the elixir of life and reversing the ageing process

A 40-year-old mum has revealed how she regularly gets mistaken for her 21-year-old daughter’s sister.

Sonia Magnier, from Cork, Ireland, who works as a life and business coach, says the mistake “always” happens with daughter Renee – but it still never fails to make her smile.

“We always get asked if we are sisters. It’s funny to see the reactions when we explain we are mother and daughter,” Sonia said, adding she thinks her career is part of what helps her stay so youthful.

“With life coaching it’s all about focusing on maintaining a positive growth mindset,” she explained.

“I work alongside a lot of younger women, so that helps too.”

Her trim figure is, unsurprisingly, a consequence of frequently working out and staying fit.

“I like to keep fit and healthy by going to the gym three times a week,” she explained.

“I also practice daily yoga and meditation to stay focused and grounded.”

And while beauty may indeed be more than skin deep, Sonia believes skincare is a good place to start.

“I look after my skin with good products and treat myself to regular facial treatments like micro-needling,” she said.

“However, I truly believe good skin comes from your lifestyle – eating a well-balanced diet and drinking lots of water.

“How you dress is so important too. Renee is very helpful and always gives me her honest feedback before I purchase anything.

“Plus I probably got very good genes from my own mother.”

Not only do Sonia and Renee, who works as a makeup artist, look like sisters, they often behave like them too.

“We do hang out a lot. We love shopping and lunch or dinner dates, and take regular city breaks and sun holidays,” Sonia said. “Girly time together is great.”

And in case you’re wondering if Sonia might be cramping her daughter’s style, in fact Renee is fully on board with her sprightly mother.

“Renee thinks it’s hilarious that we look so much like sisters, she loves having a young Mum who’s fun to hang out with,” she added.

That said, Sonia isn’t quite as into night-life as her 21-year-old daughter is these days.

The mum said: “We don’t go clubbing very often. I’ve actually become fed up with it.

“I did enough of all that in my 20s, and would much rather be home at a reasonable time and make the most of the weekends.

“Too many Sundays were wasted hungover through my younger years – I’ll leave Renee’s friends to join her on those nights!”

MUM’S MISTAKEN FOR THEIR DAUGHTER’S

These two are not the only mother and daughter with age-defying similarities — last month we reported on schoolteacher Joleen Diaz, 43, and daughter Meilani Parks, 19, from California — who look extremely similar in age and enjoy a very close relationship.

Single mum Joleen credits her youthful glow down to good old-fashioned clean living and she said she started taking care of her skin when she was just 12-years-old.

“I’ve always lived a healthy, active lifestyle. I rarely drink alcohol, I get a lot of rest, and eat a balanced, healthy diet,” Joleen said.

Mum-of-two Andrea Malczewski, 34, also has experienced a similar situation — revealing last year that she’s forever having to explain to people that her mum, Sharon Gause, is not her sister.

Sharon, 57, who is grandma to Andrea’s two kids, puts her youthful looks down to her gruelling gym workouts and sharing fashion tips with her daughter.

The pair — who are both hairdressers from the US — claim their youthful fashion taste and regular exercise keep them looking their best.

They’ve completed four marathons together and nine half-marathons in a bid to stay fit — and say they love being compared as sisters as it makes their inseparable bond even stronger.
