Racy lace bridal gown sparks age-old wedding dress debate

A video illustrating a common issue between brides and their mothers about the wedding gown has gone viral. Who is wrong?

Bridal company sparks debate on sheer dresses

A wedding dress shop has sparked intense debate over whether mothers should have an input on what a bride should wear on their big day.

Celebrations Bridal and Tux in Virginia, US, posted a video demonstrating a common issue it sees in store between brides and their mums.

In the clip, a woman modelling a sheer wedding dress showed off the racy gown for the camera, even pretending to walk down the aisle like she would on her big day.

However, it was emblazoned with the words: “MOB: “I only want my daughter in a ballgown.”

MOB is short for mother of the bride.

The aspiring bride had definitely not chosen a demure ensemble, opting for a strapless dress with a sweetheart neckline which hugged her figure, and a completely sheer bottom and train.

“All jokes aside – it’s your day, your way,” Celebrations Bridal and Tux captioned the video.

It quickly sparked debate on two fronts – whether sheer dresses were appropriate for weddings and whether mothers should have input on their daughter’s dress.

One mother shared her own experience: “I paid and my daughter wouldn’t even try one on. But, I understood her, ‘I know I don’t want a ball gown, why should I waste time trying one on?’

“Her leading choice for a while was a dress I thought was horrible, only when she found the perfect dress and we paid for it, I told her I didn’t like her previous choice.

“She got angry that I didn’t tell her before. If she had picked the dress I didn’t like, I’d have gone to my grave with that opinion.”

“I guess whoever is paying for it deserves at least to have their opinion heard,” another social media user said.

Another said it was the bride’s choice but they shouldn’t be upset when their mother doesn’t pay.

“If you’re only paying for someone’s dress or whatever, part of a wedding (or party) as way to control someone, don’t. That is not a gift, it’s manipulation. Can’t stand people like that, it’s not your wedding so it’s really not your choice,” another said.

But others were stuck on the style of dress itself, with one saying it would be more “elegant” if there was a liner.

Another said: “Each to their own but that dress ain’t it for me.”

“All these Boomers in here saying it needs a liner underneath … Just because y’all wanna cover up, doesn’t mean we do. Mind your business,” another said.

Another shared that this was the exact dress they chose to wear for their wedding.

“Long story short we didn’t marry and now I’m single and thriving and this dress is sitting in my closet about to be given to my best friend because she fell in love with it,” the woman said.
