One of country’s biggest supermarkets is doing its bit to help eradicate period poverty in Australia.

Woolworths is supporting Share The Dignity, an organisation which collects and donates period products to those in need.

The supermarket is offering 30 per cent off disposable period pads, tampons and liners from August 2 until August 8.

Online shoppers can also get involved with $2 and $5 donations. U by Kotex will then donate one period product for every $2 donated online and three period products for every $5 gifted.

And, throughout the month of August, five cents from every period product will be donated to Share the Dignity and the maintenance of more than 100 Dignity Vending Machines that dispense free period packs.

There will also be pink collection boxes at Woolworths supermarkets around the country with all period products – from period undies, pads, tampons and menstrual cups – able to be placed inside, as long as they are in their original packaging.

All donations will be distributed by volunteers to Share the Dignity’s charity partners such as homeless and domestic violence shelters.

The aim is to collect at least 200,000 period products.

Sarah De La Mare, Woolworths head of community and sponsorships, said: “We’re proud to continue our partnership with Share the Dignity and support the meaningful change they are creating.

“As the August Dignity Drive begins, we’re also excited to launch a range of offers on personal care items for our customers, and we hope the support of this campaign can help Share the Dignity continue to reach new goals in its efforts to provide menstrual equity for all.

“We would also like to thank all of our customers for their donations, as their generous contribution has helped lessen the impact of challenging times over the years.”

Rochelle Courtenay, founder and managing director of Share the Dignity, said the organisation often came across heartbreaking stories.

One such story involved a dad living in his car with his daughter when she got her first period and not being able to source the support she needed.

“You never know what someone is going through and, at the very least, let’s ensure they can manage their period with dignity,” she said.

Since 2019, Woolworths donated more than $2.5 million to the charity.
