Three young girls are dead and another is in serious condition after their mother allegedly shot them in a horror murder-suicide, authorities have said.
Tranyelle Harshman, from the US state of Wyoming, reportedly called emergency services to report that her four daughters had been shot in her home.
The 32-year-old told the 911 dispatcher where the girls were located in the house before abruptly cutting off the call.
The dispatcher had reportedly tried to keep Harshman on the phone, but she told them it was “too late”, and hung up.
When officers arrived at the home in the tiny town of Byron, about 120kms east of Yellowstone National Park, they discovered the girls with catastrophic wounds, along with their mother, who had apparently turned the gun on herself, the New York Post reports.
Only one of the girls, a 7-year-old, survived with her father, Harshman’s ex-husband, said to be camped at her hospital bed side.
Her three sisters — a 9-year-old and two 2-year-olds born less than a year apart — were dead, according to MTN News.
Harshman was initially found alive but later succumbed to her wounds.
Police are still investigating the circumstances behind the tragedy, but Harshman’s husband, Cliff Harshman, told Cowboy State Daily that his wife had been receiving treatment for severe mental health issues, including PTSD and post-partum depression.
“My wife is not a monster,” he told the outlet through tears.
“Most people don’t understand how that affects the brain. It’s a chemical imbalance … And it can be exacerbated by trying to fix it with medication.”
Mr Harshman is the biological father of the two youngest victims and had been helping raise the older two — one of whom is clinging to life in a hospital in Salt Lake City.
“This is so out of character. It’s unbelievable what had happened,” he claimed.
“We’d been getting her help, and along the way something didn’t work.
“As angry as I may be with her, I still love her — and I still lost her as well.”
Friends launched a GoFundMe to help pay the 7-year-old’s medical bills.
“Cliff Harshman, a devoted husband and father of four beautiful daughters, has suffered an unimaginable loss,” the fundraiser’s page reads.
Keri Angell, a deputy at the local Sheriff’s office, was one of the first to enter the house. She broke down in tears as she described witnessing the horrific sight.
“Seventeen years at the sheriff’s office and working crime scenes, and you don’t ever expect something like this,” she told KRTV.
