Former AFL player Jarryd Cachia has revealed he was suicidal while his influencer wife Sophie Cachia explored her bisexuality throughout their marriage.
The startling admission is made in the opening chapter of his ex-wife’s book Then There Was Her, which Cachia contributed to.
“As happy as I was to support her, I was still not doing well mentally, dealing with my own lack of purpose in life,” he wrote.
“It was always the thought of my kids that kept me going, because I love being a dad so much. But the hatred I had for myself when I looked in the mirror. I couldn’t stand the person I saw looking back at me.”
The father-of-two added while they still had a great sex life while they were married, he was the one who pushed for an official divorce.
“Soph knew I was struggling, but I never told her how bad it got – that it got to the point where I thought about taking my own life,” he said.
Sophie became famous through her mummy blog and has started a series of other companies since hitting the spotlight while Jarryd is an ex-AFL footballer.
She fell pregnant with their first child when she was aged 22, before the couple got married a few years later. But in 2017, a couple of months after the birth of her daughter Florence, Sophie’s life was thrown into chaos when a fleeting encounter with a woman sparked a sexual awakening.
Sophie, who now identifies as “sexually bisexual and emotionally gay”, dated several women over the following few years. She split with Jaryd in 2019 after deciding their relationship was no longer romantic.
Sophie started dating Matildas star Alanna Kennedy, who has made 107 appearances for the Matildas since her international debut in 2012.
Speaking to Mia Freedman on the No Filter podcast, Sophie explained she took on a more submissive role during her complicated relationship with Kennedy.
“She was my drug and I was addicted. And if you ask me why, I can’t tell you. You know, I loved her. It’s as simple as that,” she said.
The relationship ended for good during the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, with Kennedy calling it quits.
“The reality was I’d been cut off by someone who I loved so much,” Sophie said.
