‘Secret’ Woolworths code baffles shoppers

Shoppers have been left baffled by a “secret code” used at the deli counter after it was revealed by a Woolworths staffer.

It may be obvious to some, but there are plenty of shoppers left baffled by a “secret” code in Woolworths stores.

If you have ever wondered how staff figure out the prices of deli products when you have selected your item, an employee has lifted the lid.

Popular Woolies worker Liam Kirley, who runs the chain’s TikTok page, revealed a little-known “deli secret”, with his behind-the-scenes TikTok clocking more than 150,000 views.

“At our delis and butchers, this is how we figure out the prices of your products,” he begins the clip.

For those wondering how staff figure out the prices of deli meats and seafood, there is a ‘secret code’ at the back of each of the cards that display the price.

“At the back of each of the cards that display the price there is a little code that we type into our machine.

“[We] put the product on top, weigh it and then we wrap it up and it’s good to go.”

Liam captioned the clip, “Who else was today years old when they worked this out?” and it prompted more than 100 comments.

“Deli worker here! You can’t tell everyone our secrets haha,” a fellow employee wrote.

“I thought you guys just guessed everything,” a customer added, while another wrote: “I was like, ‘How they can remember all the products?”

Liam responded: “The secret is now out!”

A Woolies employee who has been working in the deli department for seven months said she has already memorised most of the “PLU’s and even for seafood and chicken”.

“And where I work we have to remember them. But it’s not that hard,” said another.

It comes after Liam shared a TikTok about a handy trolley hack earlier this year that also left many stunned.

In the clip he explained there is a hook at the back of the trolley, opposite the handle that is designed to hold your shopping bags as you roam the aisles.

“There are also these convenient hooks on the trolleys to hang your reusable bags while you shop,” he said in the TikTok.

The hack came as a surprise to some TikTok users, with one shopper writing: “Am I the only one who never knew there were hooks on the trolleys? Game changer.”

“Liam, what would we do without you,” another person joked.
