A young Aussie was shopping in Kmart when a complete stranger stopped her and commented on her outfit.

Hayli Hooper was shopping in Kmart and minding her business when another shopper called her “disgusting” because of her outfit.

Ms Hooper, 38, was wearing pink activewear and doing the usual Kmart run when a woman in her fifties stopped her and claimed her outfit was unacceptable.

“She turns around and says to me, ‘That is disgusting. Put some clothes on,” she said.

The Western Australian local who works as a nurse was “shocked” by the outburst and couldn’t believe how openly “rude” a stranger would be.

The whole encounter rattled Ms Hooper, who said the irony was that the outfit the woman was commenting on was from the Kmart active wear section, a store the stranger was currently shopping in.

This isn’t the only time that Ms Hooper has been shamed because of what she is wearing.

The 38-year-old said she was almost denied entry into a restaurant over her clothing, which she considered normal daytime attire.

Ms Hooper said she was wearing a denim skirt and a V-neck top on a hot summer’s day and headed to a beachside restaurant.

It was a nice restaurant, but not the kind of place where you’d feel the pressure to get all dressed up.

She walked into the establishment and was immediately told she couldn’t come in and eat because she was wearing “beach wear.”

“I was like, it is not beach wear, it is a top and skirt, and she said, ‘Sorry, it isn’t appropriate, and we can’t allow you in here”.

Ms Hooper was immediately frustrated.

“Are you kidding me? It is 2024, this is a normal skirt and skirt top,” she said.

She was even more annoyed when she looked over the restaurant worker’s shoulder and saw a woman dining in the restaurant wearing a similar outfit.

Ms Hooper refused to back down, and eventually, after a bit of back-and-forth, the restaurant worker let her in, but the whole experience left a bad taste in her mouth.

“It made me feel like sh*t. I’m wearing clothes and getting attacked for it,” she said.

Ms Hooper also pointed out that the outfits she wore weren’t particularly revealing or risqué, just average clothing that you’d wear in the heat, and she felt she was targeted because she’s small and has big breasts.

Even though Ms Hooper logically knows the people who commented on her outfits, their comments say everything about them and nothing about her.

Both encounters hurt her feelings, and it is frustrating that in 2024, women are still being shamed over what they wear.
