Toilet paper panic: Shoppers start stockpiling over coronavirus fears

With all the toilet paper hoarding going on right now, you’d be forgiven for thinking we’d gone back in time.

But it’s not March 2020 and for some reason people are still stocking up big on toilet paper as this photo taken outside a NSW Costco shows.

The snap, taken at Casula Costco in south-west Sydney on Saturday, shows a white ute loaded up with jumbo packs of toilet paper.

QUIZ: Have you been paying attention to the news?

After spotting it in the car park a photo was shared to the Costco Australia Facebook page where it sparked outrage among members.

“There should be limits that’s disgusting!” one woman wrote.

“Unless it is a small corner shop owner... then that’s just wrong,” another added.

“After what I experienced last year and have seen people do, it’s horrendous,” someone else stated.

Others defended the behaviour, reasoning they could be someone who lives rurally and needs to stock up.

“You know some people live an hour+ away from suburban areas and need to buy for family too,” a woman argued.

“It could potentially be someone who lives where its very isolated and only come to a big town a few times a year,” another agreed.

Supermarkets in various states and cities have recently experienced a surge in-demand for the lockdown essential following snap lockdowns and fresh coronavirus outbreaks.

As a result, some stores have issued temporary buying limits again, sparking outrage and frustration among shoppers.

A Byron Bay shopper went viral after this week after being filmed carting a huge load of toilet paper through a shopping centre car park.

People slammed the “hoarder” for panic buying, assuming it was related to Brisbane’s three-day lockdown, but it later emerged there was a reasonable explanation.

The shopper was a well-known local Airbnb host who stocked up supplies for his guests every two months.

However, it didn’t stop critics from condemning the behaviour with the footage being uploaded along with the caption “great human”.
