One thing women are still shamed for celebrating

A simple video has gone viral and sparked a furious response online because of what a woman is celebrating.

Angela Belcamino has caused mass outrage because she celebrated being child-free in her forties.

Ms Belcamino has over 200,000 followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, and she amassed over four million views on a tweet bragging about her child-free weekend.

“I’m 42. Child-free. Sunday Funday, no babysitter needed. The right hate this,” she wrote.

Ms Belcamino added a video of herself enjoying a beer, dancing to no music, and yelling, “Let’s go.”

The clip and caption certainly caught people’s attention. The tweet has amassed over four million views, six thousand likes and five thousand comments.

Ms Belcamino made it political by mentioning the “right,” which refers to more conservative politics in America.

Considering the United States is in the thick of a tight election year between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, politicising anything at the moment tends to get a significant response.

Especially after Donald Trump’s Vice President pick, J.D Vance, recently went viral after a 2021 clip of him on Tucker Carlson’s former Fox News show resurfaced.

Where he joked that America was being run by a “bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable.”

The tweet went so viral that former The View co-host and daughter of politician John McCain, Megan McCain, replied.

“Can we all just not do this? Have kids, don’t have kids - these choices are private and should not be weaponised for political points. Some of the most conservative people I know don’t have any kids,” she wrote.

The response that is most interesting, though, is not the people arguing about politics and what “the right” do or don’t like.

Rather from people enraged that a woman would dare celebrate choosing not to have children.

Which feels particularly unfair when you consider how many opportunities women who do have children have a chance to celebrate their choices to have children.

Baby showers, pregnancy photoshoots, and gender reveals - the list as endless.

What has been most exposing is the comments from mostly men declaring that Ms Belcamino’s choice not to have children doesn’t stem from her wants and needs but rather because men have rejected her.

So many responses are not worth re-sharing even to illustrate a point but there’s a definite sexist theme to the responses and a clear discomfort at the idea of a woman being happy and childless.

Someone wrote that behind her fake façade, she must be a “very lonely” woman “who can’t attract a man.”

Another claimed that she must not have had a sexual partner since the nineties to have ended up childfree.

Someone else wrote that it was “selfish” not to have children, and therefore, she must be a “selfish” person incapable of caring for a child.

Another wrote that women without children are “unhappy.” There were claims she’d die alone, and cruel comments made about her appearance with the assertion she was somehow too unattractive to have children.

The tweet quickly became less about politics and far more about shaming a woman for choosing not to have children.

Perhaps what was most bizarre about the whole thing was that so many comments seemed to suggest that it couldn’t have been an active choice the 42-year-old made as if the idea a woman should remain childless but the choice was just unfathomable.

Politics aside for the moment, the only thing the tweet revealed is that childless women still face so much stigma and judgement.
