Musician says single-sex toilets protect women from ‘intimidating’ men
A musician has recalled the moment man “deliberately” urinated in front of her, saying single-sex toilets can prevent male intimidation tactics.
UK musical icon Alison Moyet has publicly called for single-sex bathrooms to be maintained, saying that it helps protect against men who “choose to intimidate” women.
Ms Moyet, 61, detailed on Twitter her own experience after a man “deliberately” urinated in front of her with the bathroom stall open.
“In rehearsals washing my hands a bloke passed the urinals and took the stall one foot from me,” she tweeted.
“Didn’t shut the door but took his c*** out and p***** closer than my man does … Men can intimidate women by choice.”
This.Never in my 61 years have I encountered a trans woman in womanâs toilets who was anything but mindful & proper. Ms Moyet said that women were “unable” to tell men to leave female-only toilets.
“He was not busting. He was showing me he could,” she said.
“Men like this illustrate noiselessly they want to disrupt our sense of safety.”
I think there should be the availability of single sex spaces. Men like this illustrate noiselessly that they want to disrupt our sense of safety.

While Ms Moyet strongly supports having single-sex bathrooms, the 1980s pop star, whose hits include Is This Love, defended trans women using female-only bathrooms.
“Never in my 61 years have I encountered a trans woman in woman’s toilets who was anything but mindful and proper,” she said.
Her comments were made after she retweeded a Twitter post identifying a “big burly man” using a female-only bathroom at Dublin Airport and claimed that the women present in the bathroom felt “uncomfortable” and could not express their concern.
Earlier this month, it was announced that public buildings including offices, schools, hospitals and entertainment buildings being built in the UK were required to have separate, single-sex bathrooms.
However, campaigners for trans-rights have indicated that gender-neutral facilities were reassuring for transgender people who fear discrimination.

Ms Moyet, who is currently touring the UK, left Twitter in 2018 after being accused of being transphobic.
The accusations were made after she signed a letter calling on Stonewall, a notable LGBTQ charity in the UK, to acknowledge that “a conflict exists between transgenderism and sex-based women’s rights”.
She has since returned to Twitter.
