Mum saves almost $100 after making a crucial grocery switch

A frugal mum-of-three was left gobsmacked after making a grocery saving of nearly $100 just by changing one thing about how she shops.

An incredible grocery saving has been made by a budget conscious mum after she decided to make one crucial supermarket change.

The “amazing” simple switch saved the frugal mum-of-three almost $100, and she has now vowed to make it a permanent part of her weekly routine.

Sharing to a Facebook group of saving enthusiasts on the weekend, she revealed that instead of collecting her household’s regular weekly groceries from Coles, she decided to try Aldi.

“I usually do an online Click and Collect [with Coles] so I wasn’t sure if it was really going to be worth the extra time, plus all the fiddle at the checkout with a fussy three-month-old in the carrier,” she wrote in her post.

The mum’s 61 items – comprising of everything from fruit and veg, meat, dog food, baby products and cleaning products – set her back $242.20 at Aldi.

When she got home, she got to working out exactly how much she saved by making a mock cart on the Coles website with comparable items.

“I saved $94,” she revealed.

The mum included a screenshot showing her shop would have cost $336.56 at Coles.

“This is a fairly standard sized shop for me each week or sometimes fortnight (with a smaller shop on the alternate week), so if I can save this much each week that’s amazing,” she wrote.

Of close to 200 people who responded to her post, dozens claimed they too had saved major dollars after switching to Aldi for their groceries.

“I’ve recently made the swap too and love it! Still a couple of things I head to Woolies for afterwards, but I’m saving so much,” one wrote in a comment.

“Wow that’s a great comparison. I love Aldi. I’ve slowly moved to full shop in Aldi and small shop in Coles for milk, bread and cold meat,” another said.

Others were loyal Coles and Woolies shoppers and some argued she had not tried hard enough to find the cheapest options at the two big supermarkets.

“You might be surprised if you tried your normal Coles shop with mostly no name brand items because that’s effectively what you have done with Aldi,” one wrote.

The mum later added that she had not compared Coles’ home brand items with her Aldi shop, given they weren’t typically what she would purchase and therefore not a realistic comparison.

Some said they still ended up better off shopping at Coles or Woolworths, having not noticed too much of a price difference.

“That’s a great saving for you! I looked to try Aldi this week in attempt to save, but I still think I’m ahead by shopping specials at either Coles and/or Woolies,” one said.

Several respondents joked that it didn’t matter how cheap Aldi groceries were, their shop would end up costing more because of the retailer’s famous middle aisle.

“You may save $100 at Aldi – until you get to the middle aisle and buy a new jack hammer that you didn’t know you needed,” one person joked.
