Man pictured in emotional moment with PM forced to flee again

A fire victim who had an emotional meeting with the Prime Minister on Sunday has been dealt another blow.

The man pictured being comforted by Scott Morrison in a heartbreaking photo has been dealt another blow after being evacuated from his home for a second time.

On Sunday Scott Morrison visited victims at the Club Taree Evacuation Centre in Taree.

There he met 85-year-old Owen Whalan who broke down in tears after being evacuated from his Koorainghat property.

During the meeting Mr Whalan had no idea whether his home had been lost but told Mr Morrison he was pleased his dogs had survived.

Today Mr Whalan and his wife Catherine returned to their home to find it had survived the fires.

Speaking with Today, the 85-year-old said a neighbour with a water truck had taken it upon himself to water down homes around the area.

However not long after arriving back home he was forced to leave for a second time as the fires flared back up.

Earlier he told Today that Mr Morrison led a prayer for them during their meeting.

“We’re Christians and so is he. I just went and spoke to him and told where we were on a complete level, no up here or down there. He was most gracious,” Mr Whalan said.

“We were praying together. I’ve had people call me from all over the place and said ‘Owen, what were you doing.’ I said ‘Scott Morrison and I were praying together’.”

He said Mr Morrison was asking for “guidance and peace” for them, while he was asking for strength for the PM.

“No matter which way he turns he will have somebody at him. That’s just for strength and guidance and whatever is before him in the coming days,” he said.

“That elevation of what his title is nothing he was just plain straight Scott.”
