Kim Kardashian’s latest venture – a homewares offshoot of her skincare brand SKKN – has come under fire, with fans once again accusing the reality star of “greenwashing”.

“Watching these SKKN by Kim PR packages arrive, we are living in an episode of Black Mirror,” LA-based writer and content creator Meredith Lynch said in a clip on TikTok, referring to the dystopian Netflix series.

“The amount of packaging alone – and I realise it’s because [the items are made of] concrete, it has to ship with a lot of packaging – but that just adds to the problem.”

Lynch pointed to the discrepancies between Kardashian’s emphasis on “sustainability” when it comes to the line of home accessories – five items, including a tissue box and wastebasket, made from concrete – and the amount of waste generated by their postage.

“Remember, the whole thing with SKKN by Kim is that … it’s a ‘renewable ritual grounded in the ethos of sustainability,’” she said.

“Now peep the packaging for the SKKN by Kim home decor. Mind you, this is a huge box, but there’s so much packaging … This is unhinged.

“And the thing that makes me so annoyed is she really did make it, when the skincare first came out, ‘all about the environment’. And now she’s just creating these things out of concrete, which, lest we forget, is worse for the environment than private jets.

“This family is like, ‘Is there a way that we can make this worse for climate justice?’ … It’s terrifying. It’s terrifying.”

Dozens of people took to the comments to declare it “jarring”, “disgusting” and “such a waste”.

It’s not the first time – and probably won’t be the last – that the 41-year-old and her famous family have been called out over their apparent lack of regard for the planet.

When SKKN first launched in June – boasting “sustainability” and eco-friendly materials” in its initial press release – fans were quick to slam it, describing the nine-product line’s packaging as “wasteful greenwashing” (when a company purports to be environmentally conscious for marketing purposes, but actually isn’t making any notable sustainability efforts).

Beauty critic and content creator Ann Oh, known as Minsooky on social media, told The Washington Post earlier this week: “If you compare the actual products versus refills, it’s literally just an additional container that surrounds the refill, creating more plastic waste, in my opinion, not less.

“It’s 100 per cent plastic and wrapped in additional wasteful cardboard packaging. If you want to help the environment, reduce your consumption and don’t buy from this brand,” one person tweeted at the time.

“Kim has the resources to make her skincare line SKKN truly sustainable, but instead she gave us super wasteful, mediocre greenwashing,” wrote another.

Packaging for her popular shapewear and clothing brand SKIMS was also earlier this year accused of not being as sustainable as it claimed to be, after an investigation by the Changing Markets Foundation found “no evidence” to support its environmentally conscious declarations.

Asked for her “thoughts” last month on global warming by Interview magazine, and whether she feels like she’s doing “anything to combat and prevent that”, the business mogul agreed that she does “believe in climate change”.

“And I believe that anything can help. But I also believe in being realistic and I think sometimes there’s so much to worry about on this planet, and it can be really scary to live your life with anxiety,” Kardashian added.

“I have super climate change-involved friends, and I love learning from them. I do what I can, but you have to pick and choose what really works for you in your life.”

But, she said, “No one’s going to be 100 per cent perfect.”

The release of Kardashian’s homewares line comes amid a general consensus that celebrities need to stop selling (often overpriced) wares.

Off the back of Brad Pitt announcing that he, too, was launching a skincare line in late September, six London-based beauty brand founders wrote in an open letter: “We find ourselves increasingly disillusioned by most new celebrity beauty brands.

“If this industry is an industry that [celebrities] truly want to be a part of, then invest in or partner with us,” they said.

“Think of it as becoming our executive producer. Invest in early-stage founders who are already in the arena, building innovative solutions to make the industry more inclusive, sustainable and climate-friendly.”
