There were stampede-like scenes outside an Aldi store in southwest Sydney as the popular chain unveiled its latest wave of “special buys”.
The German discount supermarket, known for its cult following on social media, launched a range of kitchen essentials on Saturday, with cast aluminium pots ranging from $22.99 to $29.99, alongside new bowls, knives, air fryers and pressure cookers.
The aluminium pots and pressure cooker, released every year, are particularly popular leading to frenzied scenes outside Aldi in Bonnyrigg, in southwestern Sydney.
An Aldi spokesperson told news.com.au the supermarket is “excited to bring back Crofton Chef’s Collection cast iron pots for a limited time to help Aussies cook up delicious meals on a budget”.
“Our customer’s reaction to the release of the range is encouraging, though we ask them to be patient, calm and mindful of other customers and our employees when shopping these products,” they added.
A video of the scenes elicited some hilarious responses.
”First toilet freaking paper,” one person joked.
Another said, “It’s like they have never seen pots!”.
“Aldi really needs to put a limit on customers!! It was a frenzy!!,” one shopper said.
In one image shared of Facebook, more than 50 people could be seen standing outside the closed supermarket leaning on empty shopping trolleys.
Aldi has been present in Australia for more than two decades now, since opening its first two store in Sydney in January 2001.
The chain quickly expanded, overtaking IGA to become the third-biggest player in Australia’s supermarket sector by the end of 2013.
Aldi’s “special buys” – discounted items not normally sold in supermarkets – have remained a biweekly draw card for shoppers at its now more than 500 stores nationwide.
