‘Craziest thing I’ve ever heard’: Couple’s sleeping arrangement divides
A US woman has stunned the internet after revealing her and her husband’s sleeping arrangement – prompting people to call it “the craziest thing I’ve ever heard”.
A US woman has stunned the internet after revealing she and her husband don’t have preferred sides of the bed.
Los Angeles-based Angelina Murphy, who has almost 700,000 followers on TikTok, shared that she and her husband, Skylar Johnson, switch sides nearly every night.
In a clip that’s been viewed more than one million times, Murphy declared: “We do not have a regular side of the bed that we sleep on.”
“Last night I slept on that side and then the night before – for like two or three nights in a row – I slept on this side,” she continued, gesturing to the bed.
“It’s never discussed. We just randomly pick a side when we go to sleep and whenever this has come up in conversation people act like that is the craziest thing they’ve ever heard.”
The couple, who married in April, “just never picked a side of the bed” when they first started dating 11 years ago.
Needless to say, given the public interest in other people’s sleeping habits, Murphy’s comments filled with viewers who were divided by her confession.
“How do you live your life so wild like that. I could never,” one said.
“I think I’m even more surprised that you found each other and are both okay with this,” another wrote of the couple’s arrangement.
“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard,” a third declared.
While a fourth wrote: “My eye twitches just thinking about this.”
Psychologist Aaron Surtees told Yahoo! News last year that having a preferred side of the bed comes down to personality type and how our brains are wired.
“There is research to suggest that it is more than just a habit and people who sleep on the left side wake up in a more positive mood, calmer and feel more confident in general than people who choose to sleep on the right side,” he explained.
“People who sleep on the right, on the other hand, are believed to be grumpier and have a less positive outlook on the world.”
Practical elements also come into play, he said – on a subconscious level, people generally feel safer sleeping next to a wall instead of a window, or it might depend on the layout of your room.
“It could also be a case of your partner having a strong preference for which side of the bed they insist on sleeping and not wanting to upset them.”
