Eagle-eyed shoppers have spotted a big change at Aldi supermarkets across the country, and they’re all thrilled.

A major Covid protocol is being peeled back from German supermarket chain Aldi.

When the pandemic began, Aldi installed screens at cash registers to protect both the customer and the checkout worker.

But now, shoppers are reporting that the clear screens are being removed from stores.

One shopper made the discovery at her local store in Camberwell, Melbourne.

“Just visited my local Aldi in Camberwell and it took me a few seconds to work out what was different – the screens around the cashiers have been removed,” the woman posted to a Facebook group called Aldi Fans Australia.

“The place looks much lighter and user-friendly again.”

Other customers from around the country – in places such as St Marys in Adelaide, Rydalmere in Sydney, and Geelong in Victoria – also reported the screens had been removed.

Many thought the experience checking out at Aldi felt more comfortable without the screens.

“When they went up it became to difficult to chat to the checkout people. I rather miss the silly banter – even just say thank you became awkward,” one said.

“I saw that when I went in on Monday. They were all happy about it,” another wrote.

And a third said: “I almost forgot they weren’t originally there … you just reminded me.”

Others said it made a “big difference” to the shopping experience at Aldi.

An Aldi spokesperson told news.com.au: “Last year, we commenced consultation with all our employees to gather their input regarding the removal of sneeze guards.

“Following this period of consultation and consideration of feedback provided, we have made the decision to remove sneeze guards from all our stores.”
