Shock behind Perth woman's $10 charity shop find

A Perth woman who bought $10 earrings from a charity shop was stunned to learn the real value of the jewellery.

The woman flew to the UK for a family wedding and thought it was a good opportunity to have her earrings assessed by the experts at hit BBC television show Antiques Roadshow, with the expert calling her the “farthest travelled” person of the day.

The Australian woman revealed she purchased the earrings, which featured a gold structure with diamonds all the way through with a bow at the top, from an op shop for a fancy dress party.

“The theme was ‘op shop glamour’ so we had to find something in the op shop that was glamorous that we could wear and that’s my op shop glamour,” the woman told expert Susan Rumfitt in the repeat episode.

Ms Rumfitt said she was glad the woman had brought them over as jewellery was “her thing” and she bet the woman looked “fantastic in them”.

The woman revealed she hadn’t worn the earrings, which were clip-ons, since the party she purchased them for.

Ms Rumfitt used a thermal tester to test her suspicions about the jewellery, as this was a good first step to see if the earrings were costume or real, and it started to make a series of beeps as she pressed it on the diamonds.

She asked if the woman thought that was a good sign or not but she said she had no clue, calling them a “bit of bling”.

“Well, the noise that the tester made, says that they are diamonds. And inside the centre bit here, you’ve also got some lovely floating diamonds or happy diamonds, as they tend to be called in this range of jewellery,” Ms Rumfitt explained.

It turns out, the earrings were from the 1980s or 1980s with a faintly engraved family name from France — Chopard.

The family designed some of the most highly sought after pieces of jewellery that are seen in auctions houses such as New York and Geneva.

It turns out they were valued between $7900 and $11,804

The Perth woman was visibly shocked after discovering just how much her op shop find was worth.

She couldn’t keep the smile off of her face, declaring she was going to go on a shopping spree before returning back Down Under.

“That’s grand, thank you,” the woman said.

The episode originally aired in 2015.
