An Aussie family had their lives upside down when they arrived home to discover it had been ransacked.

Melbourne mum Ashleigh Newman and her two young boys were out at Christmas celebrations at her parents house when they returned home to discover their presents and an urn containing ashes were stolen

Along with Ashleigh’s son’s gifts, the burglars also took an Apple iPad and notebook, gaming consoles, mobile phones, jewellery and medications from her Frankston home on Boxing Day.

“She is still discovering things that have been taken, but worst of all one item that was invaluable was the cremated remains of her unborn baby that was tucked away in a special place. We are hoping so badly they can return at least that,” her sister Karlie said in a GoFundMe page set up to help Ashleigh and her two boys.

“My sister is a single mum who is doing her best, and regretfully didn’t have contents insurance. I am making this page in the hopes that anyone could help out in any way they can.”

The heartbroken mum said she is desperate for the small blue urn to be returned.

“It’s just awful. It’s a horrible feeling. I can’t imagine in any realm, why anyone would do this to anyone,” Ashleigh told 7NEWS.

“I always planned on doing something special with them, I just didn’t know what to do. Now to feel like I don’t have that opportunity is not a nice feeling.”

Police suggest the thieves broke into the house through the rear door frame between midday on Christmas Day and 11am on Boxing Day.

Not only did the robbers raid the home and steal the items, they also left the family’s fridge open and their food to spoil.

While the family do not have home contents insurance, the single mum said all she wants is the urn to be returned.

“They’re not of any value to anyone but me and it would be really nice for me to have them back,” she said.

“I’d feel a lot better about the situation if I could just get that back.”

The GoFundMe page has been set up to help Ashleigh replace some of the stolen items - it has raised more than $7000 in 48 hours.

“I know it’s an embarrassing thing to ask for help, but at a time like this I just don’t want to see her struggle if help is a possibility,” sister Karlie said.

“Anything is greatly appreciated!!”
