Alleged drunk driver who killed bride was ‘three times legal limit’
An alleged drunk driver who crashed into a bride on her wedding night was more than three times the legal alcohol limit, police have said.
An alleged drunk driver in the US who has been charged over a car crash that killed a newlywed bride had a blood alcohol concentration level of more than three times the legal limit, police have said.
Jamie Lee Komoroski, 25, 25, was arrested and charged with DUI involving death and reckless homicide after her car crashed into a golf cart carrying newlyweds Samantha and Aric Hutchinson in Folly Beach, South Carolina. Samantha, 34, died at the scene, New York Post reports.
Previously, blood results from Ms Komoroski had not been released. Now, according to a toxicology report, it has been revealed that the former waitress had a blood-alcohol level of 0.261 – more than three times the legal limit in the US which is 0.08. (In Australia, the legal limit is 0.05.)
Police alleged Ms Komoroski was intoxicated after the crash that she appeared confused.
“All the sudden something hit me,” she allegedly told responding officers, according to the incident report, as well as repeatedly saying, “I did nothing wrong.”
The report, filed by Sergeant Zac Halpern, revealed Ms Komoroski admitted to having two drinks an hour before the accident – a beer and a tequila with pineapple juice.
When Sgt Halpern asked her how drunk she was between a scale of one to 10, he alleged he heard her mumble that she was at an eight before demanding a lawyer.
When the responding officers then tried to administer a sobriety test, they claimed Ms Komoroski refused, yelling for her boyfriend as police noted that she appeared to try to hide her eyes from them.
When Sgt Halpern tried to help her out of the car to check her balance, the officer noted she had trouble standing on her feet, but Ms Komoroski claimed she was fine.
Sgt Halpern’s report also claimed Ms Komoroski was dazed at the scene of the crash, calling for her boyfriend at one moment and then suddenly screaming after looking back at the wreckage.
He noted that he had to repeat his reasoning three times after she refused to get in the back of his patrol car.
“This is a clear indication of someone who is intoxicated, is to repeat over and over, after their question has already been answered,” Sgt Halpern wrote in the report.
Officials said Ms Komoroski was driving at 104km/h in a 40km/h zone in her rented Toyota Camry along a poorly-lit residential street when she slammed into the newlyweds’ slow-moving vehicle.
The golf cart was thrown over 90m on impact and rolled over several times.
Samantha was declared dead at the scene, still wearing her wedding dress. Her 36-year-old husband, Aric Hutchinson, was transported to hospital suffering from a brain injury and multiple broken bones.
Aric underwent two surgeries and was released on May 4.
Ms Komoroski, who was not injured in the collision, was arrested and charged with three counts of DUI involving death or serious bodily injury and reckless homicide.
She remains jailed in North Charleston, having been denied bail.
