Abbie Chatfield has revealed she has thought about political career

Australian media personality Abbie Chatfield has revealed her political ambitions as the latest season of her show FBoy Island prepares to air.

It may have been her appearance on The Bachelor that first helped Abbie Chatfield rise to fame but it was her political opinions during Covid lockdowns that cemented her as a household name.

Now, the 29-year-old has revealed if she’d ever translate her political opinions into a career in the field.

“Actually, recently I was like ‘maybe I should go into politics’, but I’m tired. Maybe if FBoy Island, season 3, doesn’t happen,” she told Good Weekend when asked when she is going to run for office.

The media personality said her political opinions were formed early after she grew up with a single mother and no men in the house, meaning she didn’t have “problematic, patriarchal ideals” instilled in her.

She said a lot of her friends who grew up in more “traditional” households think it’s normal for women to clean up after dinner.

“My mum’s a really intelligent, vocal, progressive woman. Growing up with her, we’d watch the news and she’d go ‘What a bloody d***head’ or ‘Isn’t it awful the way these women are being treated?’ There was constant conversation. It helped me refine my debating skills,” she said.

She said there are things that Australia has right, like Medicare and how mandatory voting makes Australian political parties more nuanced.

But, there are a lot of things, in Ms Chatfield’s opinion, that Australia gets wrong — specifically racism and how the 2023 Australian Indigenous Voice referendum went down.

Ms Chatfield said there is a lot to combat that, such as the activists and education on social media.

“People are having progressive conversations that are really important. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but there’s optimism and hope,” Ms Chatfield said.

Ms Chatfield first rose to fame on The Bachelor in 2019, before starting her podcast It’s A Lot, winning I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, appearing on The Masked Singer and hosting FBoy Island.
