A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl has earned an award from police after saving her mother’s life with a savvy call to emergency services.

Megan Stratton was awarded the Chief Constable’s Certificate of Appreciation at a Suffolk Police award ceremony on Thursday, for her “exceptional” call after her mother collapsed with a seizure at home.

Despite her young age, Megan calmly dialled the emergency number on December 15, explaining her mother Charlotte was unwell and her father was out getting some medicine, according to Suffolk Police.

Control room operator Alan Austin kept her on the line until police and ambulance workers could arrive, chatting about Santa Claus and Megan’s pet dog as well as how her mother was doing.

Asked if she had anyone else there, a brother or sister, Megan responded: “Lulu is here with me — but she is my pet dog.”

During the recorded call, Megan is heard telling the operator she is fetching a cushion and blanket to make her mother comfortable, and stroking her mother’s back so she knows she's there. She also explains she is not tall enough to let the police in the front door when they arrive.

Asked her mother’s age she says, “I don’t know how old she is because she never tells me” and assures the operator she’ll find out when her mum recovers.

Charlotte regularly suffers seizures and had explained to Megan what she should do if it happened when no one else was around.

She told the Mirror: “Suffolk Police called me back and explained what she’d done and I was a bit stunned and once we knew we were really, really proud.

“We knew I have seizures regularly so what we do is, on the emergency button on the mobile phone, we have daddy’s number programmed and the ambulance, so it was quite easy for her to do.”

Police and ambulance attended the address just as Megan’s father Trevor returned, and were able to give immediate medical assistance to Charlotte.

Temporary Chief Constable, Gareth Wilson, said: “Megan’s call to police was truly exceptional to listen to — it is very rare to hear a child handle a call in such a calm manner.

“Megan gave a lot of information to Alan for a child of her age and our Chief Constable’s Certificate of Appreciation goes some way toward recognising her and saying well done.”
